Thanksgiving 2011
This was an eventful week: my hubby N had his Vertical Sleeve surgery as well as my 2-week follow-up appointment with the surgeon followed by Thanksgiving/black Friday and then the week ended with my mom being hospitalized with congestive heart failure last night.
N chose the VSG surgery because he liked the fact that it was a simpler surgery that didn't involve rerouting the intestines and didn't leave the remnant stomach inside. After I sailed through my surgery, he was sure he'd have the same experience. Hmmm.... I told him to make sure the anesthesiologist gave him nausea meds because heaving is not a good thing with stitches on your gut. They did give him some, but not the 3 different meds they gave me because he spent his first 24 hours post surgery dry heaving with a pillow clutched to his abdomen...ouch! Otherwise he also experienced much more pain than I did. Which now makes me a hero in his eyes (which always is a good thing!) He was released Thanksgiving afternoon and is currently taking each day at a time.
Normally I host Thanksgiving Dinner for my 3 kids, their spouses/significant others, my 6 grandkids and my sister and mom. Which nicely fills up the house with loved ones and the scent of roasting turkey... To me that's what Thanksgiving is. When N's surgery was scheduled for this week, I told everyone that they were on their own. I just felt that N needed to rest, not stress about hosting a family dinner. I was hoping one of the kids would squeeze us all into their house and I could come eat a few bites of turkey drowning in Gravy. But they all took the opportunity to go to their in-laws for dinner instead. So I went visiting to my daughters for a tiny bit before picking up my hubby from the hospital. Later, I nuked a turkey Lean Cuisine. Which was the best thing I've eaten post surgery!
Later that night I decided to try my hand at Walmarts Black Friday sale. I honestly have never partaken in this kind of thing, I'm not fond of crowds and I'm not sure what I was thinking...I really thought, "How bad can it be? Take the worst Saturday crowds and multiply it by 2." How about multiply by maybe 10! It was amazing! I left as soon as I could, empty handed about 30 minutes after I arrived. For those of you who haven't participated in this before my suggestion is this: DON't! It was truly scary. If there had been a fire, I would have died. It was a gridlock of human beings out to save $15 at the expense of being kind or considerate. Ugh...
My surgeons appt went fine. There wasn't really remarkable about it. My weight loss according to them is about 20 lbs from me first visit. That's what I'd been thinking myself.
Last night my sister (who takes care of my 85 yr old mom) called to tell me that they had admitted her to the hospital. I don't really know more than that, but will find out more than that today. I pray she'll recover soon.
I've got to run, take care!

Week 2 Post Gastric Bypass Surgery
??2.5 lbs., 5 lbs. lost from last week, 21 lbs total!
I feel so good! It's been a really good week. I quit taking any pain meds last Monday and to be honest the pain always was extremely minimal. I think once I got out of the hospital I could have managed it with Tylenol but I kept waiting for the pain to kick in and really hurt. It never did I am happy to say!
Tuesday I made hubby take me to the grocery...I had gone stir crazy and was out of coffee creamer (essential in my book!)
All week I kept considering going out on my own and finally did drive my own car on Friday. I am continually trying to find high protein sources because I'm not getting enough in. So I found a recipe for egg custard that I wanted to try. Each serving packs 9 grams of protein. I first went to Bed Bath & Beyond for some 4 oz custard cups then off to Kroger. There was no problems driving other than a bad tendency to speed...which can not be attributed to the surgery - I've always had that bad habit.
I didn't love the egg custard, but it was tolerable. Just about everything I've eaten post surgery has been that way. I wonder if I'll ever find food I enjoy? In a way it would be great if I didn't. But I bet I'll find something when I step up to my new eating stage today.
Yes, I get to add 'Soft Foods' to my diet. Scrambled eggs, tuna, cottage cheese etc. And then chew chew chew until I can't tell what it was before swallowing. That will be a big change as I used to virtually inhale food pre-surgery.
Tomorrow is 2 things: hubby's VSG surgery and my 2-weeks surgery check-up. Since they're both at the same building why not combine them both?
I am nervous about N's surgery. The last time I had a husband have stomach surgery, he died. Granted, it's obviously not the same person or the same surgery and N is much, much healthier. But the worry IS there.
Well gotta run, going to take my fat corgi, Maggie May out for a walk.
Take care...

Week 1 (post-op)
??7.5 pounds, 16.5 lbs lost (since beginning of 2 week pre-surgery diet)
I'm sorry that I haven't updated this in so long, it's been a big few weeks and honestly it didn't occur to me. I'll try to do better now that I have concrete things to report!
Eventually (when I see my surgeon for my follow-up appointment) I'll figure out what my true starting weight is and will adjust all my numbers. It gets confusing because what number you are interested in is how much I've lost since my surgery, but I'm interested in the grand total lost. You remember that I had the insurance mandated 6 months medically supervised weigh-ins, in which I actually managed to gain a pound. Then I had the 2 month wait for surgery which included approximately 60 "Last Meals." Followed by my 2-week Pre-surgery diet designed to shrink my fatty liver. Cumulating with my RNY surgery last Monday.
I didn't weigh in right before surgery. There was too much going on and it didn't occur to me :-(.
Just to catch you up, surgery went better than expected and when I woke up afterwards thanks to modern pain meds, I really didn't feel any different! I was released 2 days later and was just happy to have the ever-annoying drain tube removed.
Since then I have been on full liquids which include yogurt and sugar free pudding. I'm amazed that I haven't been hungry ever and struggle to get in the bare minimum that I need. What a miracle! Next week (Thanksgiving week) I get to progress to the mushy food stage...it will be the only Thanksgiving ever in my life to go by without turkey being ingested which I'm rather sad about.
I've been reading a couple blogs from fellow bariatric surgery peeps: The World According to Eggface and Waning Woman. They both are great and I have to give props to Waning Woman for the use of question marks on her/my weight. It's a brilliant idea!!
